Cheese FONDUES and Wind on the Sails

The 14th July 2022

Buddy up!

Continually evolving since its inception, Le Naufrageur microbrewery is also a food service and catering operation featuring Gaspesian flavoured dishes. As it turns out, 1001 Fondues has roots in the area. Jean-Yves Lapointe, otherwise known as Mr. 1001 Fondues, is a proud Gaspesian, native of Maria, the neighbouring municipality of Carleton-sur-Mer. Synchronicity or meaningful coincidences? Who knows? However, one thing is for certain: both businesses have wind in their sails and include permanent joie de vivre on the menu. From the get-go, the table was set for a dual adventure in the land of 1001 treasures! A partnership between Le Naufrageur and 1001 Fondues was the most perfect association one could dream of. Two well-known cheese FONDUES throughout the province were born from this natural collaboration in 2018: La Léonne (made with organic white beer) and Thé du Labrador (made with IPA beer).

Le Naugrageur: The hub of picturesque Baie-des-Chaleurs

Baie-des-Chaleurs is named for and located on the remarkable bay of the same name that caresses the south shore of Gaspe peninsula. With its long beaches protected from the wind, its temperate waters, its stunning views and its villages home to a rich natural and cultural mosaic, this portion of the peninsula has been attracting vacationers for ages. Blessed by nature with breathtaking maritime landscape, the town of Carleton-sur-Mer is ideally located between sea and mountains. In the heart of this community of 3,991 inhabitants, Le Naufrageur has been (rightfully so) a source of pride for the locals since 2008; the establishment distributes more than twenty quality beers throughout Quebec, in nearly 500 points of sale. But there’s more. Over time, Le Naufrageur microbrewery has become one of the focal points of the social and cultural life of the Baie-des-Chaleurs region. Live entertainment, along with cultural and artistic activities, is featured at the themed microbrewery all year long. The name “Le Naufrageur” seems appropriate since three of the founders of the microbrewery claim the noble title of descendants of “pirates” in the Baie-des-Chaleurs. (The “Naufrageur” designation was adopted by drawing on family, maritime and Gaspesian stories.) For many residents of Carleton-sur-Mer, Le Naufrageur is nothing short of a haven for all fishermen, sailors, pirates, sea dogs and travellers who pass through the Baie-des-Chaleurs.

Two fondue essentials: La Léonne and Thé du Labrador

Meticulously crafted with Quebec cheeses, these two beer fondues reveal to the palate very different characteristics. A sure value, La Léonne is made and goes perfectly with the cheeses from Fromagerie de l’Isle. It is known for its smooth and enjoyable character. The tasty Thé du Labrador, for its part, proves to have good length and full-bodied accent. It also highlights the typicality of the cheeses from Fromagerie de l’Isle. Also notable is that Thé du Labrador highlights the flavours of the Forestière series (a concept of local beers put forward by the microbrewery, which emphasizes the distinctive taste of local plants that have always been used, aromatically or medicinally, by the various Gaspesian populations). But most importantly, both La Léonne and Thé du Labrador are “ready-to-cook”, which means “nothing to add.” Just enjoy them with your favourite side dishes! Just that simple! Treat yourself to a poutine Léonne!

The stars are aligned

It all started in 2008 when, in the vibrant and festive community of Carleton-sur-Mer (Baie-des-Chaleurs), Le Naufrageur entered the Gaspesian and Quebec brewery landscape. And now, the future looks promising for the two businesses as 1001 Fondues prepares an initiative that is sure to delight the taste buds of young and old alike. Starting this summer, Le Naufrageur will offer its customers (and its “pirates”) 1001 Fondues’ The Hot Fondue™ bread, a timeless baguette featuring local 1001 cheese fondue. Experience the grandiose Baie-des-Chaleurs! The cheese fondues are delicious and the beers are expertly combined with delicious ingredients. Plus, there’s fun all over the fondue pot! The stars are aligned!

*La Léonne and Thé du Labrador beer fondues are available at Le Naufrageur Microbrewery, at the 1001 Fondues store and on the online store of the 1001 Fondues website as well as in a number of specialized cheese shops, fine grocery stores, beer stores and IGA supermarkets.
