Why LOCAL CHEESE Products Are the Way to Go!

October 19th, 2023

When we think of cheese, we often think of France, Switzerland, or Italy. These countries are renowned for their varieties and cheese traditions. But did you know that Canada, and particularly Quebec (the national leader in cheese production), also produces many high-quality cheeses that are just as impressive as their overseas counterparts?

Quebec, it’s worth mentioning, is a land of cheeses, and not just cheddar. For several decades, Quebec cheesemakers have been developing and diversifying their production, drawing inspiration from European traditions but also creating local specialties. Today, you’ll find cheeses of all kinds, from Brie to blue, including goat cheese and Camembert. We’ve come as far as the Milky Way!

The evolution of local cheeses is closely tied to the history and culture of Quebec. The first French settlers brought their know-how with them, but had to adapt to the “particular” conditions of the territory and the resources available. In that environment, the first milk surpluses led to the production of North America’s first cheese (a grilled type). Over time, as Canadians’ palates matured, local cheesemakers perfected their art. This ongoing evolution has fostered the development of nuances in all types of cheeses, such as Brie or Camembert, which require delicate aging and eloquently express their terroir. Today, Quebec boasts over 90 cheese dairies, reflecting the diversity and richness of Quebec cheese heritage. Appreciated throughout Canada, “Quebec cheeses” are enjoyed in a multitude of ways. Whether for a cheese platter, a raclette, or a simple snack, there is a local cheese for every occasion and taste. Whether you’d like to accompany a glass of wine or a craft beer from a local microbrewery, or to liven up a salad, or even prepare a warm and friendly cheese fondue, Quebec’s cheesemaking terroir boasts hundreds of talented artisans behind high-quality cheeses that meet the expectations of an expanding market!

Quebec cheeses are a reflection of a terroir that has earned its place among gourmets. Recognized for their quality and authenticity, they regularly win national and international awards. We can’t say it enough! But once this is acknowledged, defining what makes local cheeses the way to go will require an in-depth examination… especially when there’s so much choice on the market!

Well, there are many good reasons to select cheeses from here over those from elsewhere. Firstly, artisan cheeses made with quality 100% Canadian milk come from cows raised in an environment that respects animal welfare. Local dairy producers are concerned about the health of their cows and sometimes treat them using antibiotics. But note this: the milk from these cows is not consumed by Canadian consumers. What’s more, the taste of cheese is influenced by a multitude of parameters: the lively clay soil on the farm, the small flowers and herbs in the pasture, the ambient air in the barn, and so on. Summer and winter milk are very different, because the cows don’t eat the same things. As a result, the region’s terroir offers flavours that are truly local, authentic and original! Last but not least, local cheeses contain proteins, calcium and vitamins (A, B2 and B12), so they’re simply good for you!

Secondly, there’s the importance of buying “local.” This means supporting your community (buying local keeps money and jobs in your town or region), promoting economic growth (by spending your money on small, often family-run local businesses, you’re helping to promote economic growth in your region) and making a decidedly positive gesture (by buying products made here, you know that the distance travelled in transportation related to distribution is reduced, and therefore allows for lower greenhouse gas emissions).

Thirdly, local artisan cheeses are the fruit of ancestral skills, handed down from generation to generation by passionate craftsmen. They reflect the diversity and richness of the region, with their varied tastes and textures.
